칼의 노래를 읽고

나는 칼의 노래의 책머리를 먼저 읽고 생각에 빠졌다 . “ 나는 인간에 대한 모든 연민을 버리기로 했다 . 연민을 버려야만 세상은 보일 듯싶었다 . 연민은 쉽게 버려지지 않았다 . 그해 겨울에 나는 자주 아팠다 .” 는 김훈의 말은 보잘것없는 나약함을 버리려고 하는 장수의 모습과 비슷하다고 생각했다 . 나는 이 세상에 옳고 그른 일은 없다고 생각한다 . 다만 사실이 있고 , 그 사실들을 해석해 바라볼 수 있는 무수히 많은 관점이 있다고 생각한다 . 나는 인간에 대한 연민이 가득한 관점을 인류애 , 또는 용서하는 너그러움이라고 생각했다 . 그리고 그 관점을 가지려고 노력해왔다 . 예를 들어 , ‘ 정의 ’ 라는 개념은 복수심을 그럴듯하게 포장한 것으로 볼 수 있다 . 내가 가진 것을 빼앗기지 않겠다는 다짐 , 그리고 남이 공정하지 않게 ( 즉 , 납득할 수 있는 이유없이 ) 나보다 많은 것을 얻었을 때 오는 시기심인 것이다 . 좀 더 너그러운 사람이었다면 그러려니 하고 넘어갈 수 있는 일들을 ‘ 정의 ’ 로 무장한 사람들은 걸고 넘어진다 . 너무 일반화하는 정의 (definition) 이라고 할 수도 있지만 , 정의 (justice) 를 적용하는 일이 사소하거나 크게 느껴지는 것의 차이일 뿐 , 앞서 말한 그 본질은 크게 다르지 않다는 것이 나의 생각이다 . 그리고 나는 시시비비를 가리고 정의 (justice) 를 운운하던 나의 모습에 회의감을 느껴 너그러움 , 인류애 , 즉 인간에 대한 연민으로 나를 새로 채우고자 했다 . 그래서 내가 추구한 바와 상반된 이야기를 하는 김훈의 서문이 나에게 깊은 인상을 남겼고 , 나는 자기방어적 욕구가 솟아오르는 것을 억눌러야 했다 . 이 책에서 이순신의 관점이 연민을 버린 김훈이 세상을 바라본 관점과 동일하다고 생각하고 책을 해석하고자 했다 . 책을 얼핏 보면 , 정말 인간에 대한 연민이 없는 사람이 쓴 것처럼 전쟁의 추함과 잔인함이 건조한 문체로 서술되어 있다 . 문장은 간결하며 , 사람들이 죽고 서로 죽이고 ...

              Welcome aboard, welcome to my observatory. This private observatory is about the size of a bedroom—in fact, it is a bedroom—with pale blue walls and sailor-white windowsills. The room’s two windowed-walls join at the top corner of my house, reminding one of a ship’s head. Spanned outside the windows is greenery, but for now, imagine the panorama to be as blue as the wall. There is only one wooden chair, so if you could draw up the folded extra leaning in the corner, that would be great. You must now be thinking that the place looks nothing like an observatory. There are no mass cylinders, electric circuits, telescopes, or brass scales after all. But not to worry—a laptop, a globe, and a small trunk of books will be enough for our expedition. Ship Ahoy!
